Guest Profile

Kan Togashi

Born in 1982, he grew up in Teine, on the western edge of Sapporo City, at the foot of Mount Teine (elevation 1,023m) in Hokkaido. He currently resides in Tokyo, having moved there 8 years ago. He primarily works from his studio in Higashi-Ueno.

He frequently sketches when out and about or traveling. He almost habitually draws unless he feels a bit embarrassed. While drawing is an "occupation," sketching is primarily a "memo," driven by the desire to record what is present or what comes to mind. A distinctive technique he employs is depicting dancers performing live at life-size. In continuously capturing moving subjects, this is similar to sketching cityscapes or pedestrians, but by drawing on a large screen, the process of the painting's development can be shared with the audience. Furthermore, drawing life-size allows for the concept of "transferring the motif directly onto the canvas (wall/support)" to be realized. In abstract painting, he aims to construct elements like sound and combine them to create a "musical timeline" in space. The emergence of temporality and directionality—he believes this is a characteristic of his expression, shared across sketching and depicting dancers.
