Everyone.
Thank you for always subscribing to WIZZARD LINER NOTES, which I distribute at my own pace.
Fuji Rock, Summer Sonic, and other major music events are just around the corner! Have you bought your tickets yet?
Recently, I got really excited when I found out that Autechre, a British techno unit, would be coming to Japan for the first time in 8 years, as part of the Sonic Mania lineup. So, this week, I want to talk a little about IDM.
Thank you for joining me again this time.
Many of you have probably heard of EDM, but might be wondering, "What is IDM?"
What exactly is IDM?
IDM, or Intelligent Dance Music,
is a genre of electronic music that emerged in the early 90s. It's characterized by artists who create experimental and more intellectual sounds better suited for home listening than for dancing.
It often draws influences from various sources such as techno, acid house, drum and bass, and ambient music.
Among these, the British record label WARP RECORDS primarily releases electronica and IDM, and I have many favorite artists on that label.
Of course, Autechre is one of them.
Others include:
Aphex Twin

Boards of Canada

Gonjasufi

Squarepusher

and many more. I'm full of favorite artists.
Ah, I'm so excited, lol.
I think some of you might have heard of some of these artists.
It's a genre that divides opinion, so if you're interested, please give it a try. Clark and Boards of Canada are good starting points.
To talk a little about Autechre, the first time I saw them was at TAICOCLUB 2010, and the last time was also at TAICOCLUB 2015.
The stage production was incredibly memorable. I knew their music, but experiencing it live for the first time is something I still remember vividly.
The stage was completely dark, and of course, it was also pitch black in the mountains outside. LOL.
I could only sense the presence of my friends beside me and the people around me. LOL LOL.
Rumbling, booming sounds like an earthquake, mechanical noises, and complete darkness all at once.
And it lasted the whole time. LOL LOL.
No, seriously, come on. Right?
Darkness...
There aren't many live shows like that, are there? LOL LOL.
But, it was just so cool!
Eventually, listening in the pitch black, I stopped being conscious of the people around me, focused on the delicate sounds, and by the time my eyes adjusted, I could see the stars in the sky, and it was truly moving!
I wonder if Autechre will do another "darkness" live performance at Sonic Mania this time?
I'm looking forward to it.
If you're interested, please check out Autechre as well.
I plan to go see Autechre dressed in full "dark mode" attire!
